FAQs

What happens at our first session?

The first session of counseling is about an hour in length and looks a little different from the rest of counseling. During this session, we will get to know each other. The counselor will ask a lot of questions about what brings you to counseling and other factors that may be impacting you. This information helps the counselor have a better picture of who you are, where you come from, and how best to design an individualized treatment plan to help you achieve your goals.

What does a normal counseling session look like?

A typical session is once a week and around 55 minutes long. These sessions typically start with small talk to see how you are doing. Sessions also include checking in on homework, learning and practicing tools, education on helpful topics, and assigning homework.

What does counseling homework mean?

Homework in counseling is usually practicing a new skill learned in session throughout the week, charting or tracking symptoms, and others depending on the personalized course of treatment.

What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. EMDR is a form of therapy that focuses on reprocessing memory through Dual Attention Stimulation (DAS) which activates both sides of the brain allowing memories stored in one part of the brain to be reprocessed with the full brain, allowing for a more complete understanding of the memory.

What is DAS?

DAS stands for Dual Attention Stimulation. In EMDR, DAS is the physical process of stimulating both sides of the brain to allow for the reprocessing of memories. DAS is achieved through various options depending on the client’s preference. Some of these options include eye movement following the counselor’s hand movements, tapping, etc. The counselor works with the client to establish the method of DAS that is most comfortable and effective for the client.
